G7-Summit-2015
1) The 2-day Summit of G7 countries started on 7 June 2015. This summit is being held at which place? – Schloss Elmau (Germany)
Explanation: Schloss Elmau is a luxury hotel in the state of Bavaria in South Germany. It is site of the 41st Summit of G7 countries from 7 to 8 June 2015. G7 is the group of seven major advanced economies of the world and includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Apart from these 7 countries, the President of the European Commission is a permanent member at all G7 summits. Russia has been excluded from, what was previously known as the G8, since the annexation of Crimea last year. The G7 Summit 2015 in Schloss Elmau will focus on the global economy as well as on key issues regarding foreign, security and development policy. Additionally the UN conferences to be held in 2015 as well as the post-2015 agenda will be discussed. Russia is also a key subject of this summit over its role in support of Ukrainian rebels.

2) Who won the men’s singles title of French Open 2015 by defeating the much-fancied Novak Djokovic (Serbia) in the finals on 7 June 2015 to become the oldest winner of the French Open in 25 years? – Stanislas Wawrinka (Switzerland)
Explanation: 30-year old Wawrinka scored a famous 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory to secure his second career major after the 2014 Australian Open. This historic win thus ended world number one Djokovic’s bid to become only the eighth man to secure a career Slam as he slumped to his third defeat in a Roland Garros final in four years. Wawrinka also became the oldest champion in Paris since Andres Gomez (Ecuador) in 1990. This was Wawrinka’s fourth win in 21 meetings against Djokovic. It is worth mentioning that Wawrinka is a regular appearance at Chennai Open, India’s premier ATP Grand Prix tournament and in January 2015 he became the first in the history of the Chennai Open tournament to have won the crown thrice.

3) Union Govt. on 5 June 2015 announced plans to establish country’s 13th major port in Maharashtra with an investment of Rs. 6,000 crore. This port would be established at which place near Mumbai? – Dahanu
Explanation: The proposed port would be located 4.5 nautical miles off the Dahanu coast in northern Maharashtra’s Palghar district, about 150 km from Mumbai. This port would thus become 13th major port of India. This project envisaging an investment of up to Rs 6,000 crore is likely to be completed over the next three years. In a first, the Centre has tied up with the state government by making it an equity partner to ensure the port gets completed fast. The port, which will have a capacity to handle 60-100 million tonne of cargo per annum, will be built completely on the reclaimed land spread over 2,500 acres. Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), which is the largest container port in the country, will own 76% in the proposed port and the remaining 24% will be held by the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB). The project will be executed on public-private partnership (PPP) model.

4) On 6 June 2015 former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was conferred with which award by the Bangladesh Govt. for his role in the country’s independence struggle and consolidating India’s friendship with the nation? – “Bangladesh Liberation War Honour”
Explanation: “Bangladesh Liberation War Honour” was conferred on Atal Bihari Vajpayee by Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid, who handed over the award to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a glittering ceremony at Bangabhaban, the President’s house. The citation of the award hailed Vajpayee as a “highly respected political leader” and recognised his “active role” in support of the liberation war of Bangladesh. It said, as President of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and a member of the Lok Sabha, Vajpayee took various steps towards that end. The award was collected by Narendra Modi, who was on his state visit to Bangladesh. Vajpayee is indisposed and is away from public life for several years now.

5) Former bureaucrat M.N. Buch, who passed away on 6 June 2015, was known for role in developing which Indian city with his modern urban planning concepts? –Bhopal
Explanation: M.N. Buch was known for his clear views on betterment of Bhopal and Madhya Pradesh, especially in context of urban planning and environment protection. He was commonly referred to as ‘Architect of New Bhopal’ for the urban planning concepts that he introduced in the city. He sought voluntary retirement from Indian Administrative Services (IAS) in 1984 and took up social activities. An expert in housing, forestation, town planning and environmental protection, he set up the NGO National Centre for Human Settlements and Environment (NCHSE). He passed away in Bhopal on 6 June at the age of 80.

6) Who won the Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix on 7 June 2015? – Lewis Hamilton (Britain)
Explanation: This was fourth win for Hamilton this year and with the win he extended his lead in the F1 standings over fellow Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg (Germnay), who finished the race at second place. Valtteri Bottas was third, giving Williams its first appearance on the podium all season. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastien Vettel were fourth and fifth respectively.
