Maggi-2015
1) Food group Nestle on 5 June 2015 withdrew the highly popular “Maggi” noodles from sale in India following a food scare sparked by reports of excess lead and presence of harmful MSG in it. The “Maggi” brand of instant noodles is under fire in India as reports of presence of these harmful substances have been reported from labs of several states across the country. What is the name of the food inspector belonging to the Uttar Pradesh FDA who had taken the first step against Nestle’s “Maggi” noodles in 2014 for allegedly flouting food safety norms? – V.K. Pandey
Explanation: V.K. Pandey, the District Food Officer (DFO) of Barabanki district, had taken the first step nearly 15 months ago against Nestle’s Maggi noodles brand. This started after he had collected samples of “Maggi” noodles from a retailer in Barabanki on 10 March 2014 under a routine check. Sixteen days later, the Government Regional Public Analyst Laboratory in Gorakhpur, one of the state’s six food testing labs, confirmed the presence of monosodium glutamate (MSG), a flavour enhancer that officials said is not listed on the noodle packets. Nestle was then served the notice and samples of “Maggi” were sent to Central Food Laboratory, Kolkata for further testing. The report from this lab came on 7 April 2015 and confirmed the presence of MSG, as well as lead in higher quantity than the permissible limits. “Maggi” is now facing an avalanche of tests across the country for allegedly flouting food safety norms. Nestle on 5 June withdrew the product from India. The company however reiterated that “Maggi” noodles are completely safe. On the other hand, the central food safety regulator Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), on 5 June 2015, ordered recall of all nine approved variants of “Maggi” instant noodles from the market, terming them “unsafe and hazardous” for human consumption.

Indelible-Ink-ECI-2015
2) The Election Commission of India (ECI) during June 2015 gave which important order pertaining to application of indelible ink mark in the elections? – It ordered that the indelible ink should be applied thoroughly using a brush specifically provided for the purpose
Explanation: Indelible ink is used to mark voters’ finger during elections to avoid fraudulent, multiple voting and malpractices. The ECI had received numerous complaints regarding the ink not being applied properly by poll officials. There have been complaints that poll officials use match sticks instead of a brush to apply ink. The ink is barely visible and often leads to allegations that people try to remove it in a bid to cast vote again. The ECI order makes it clear that the ink “will be applied on voter’s finger with the help of brush from top of the nail to the bottom of the first joint of the left forefinger”. Use of brush will ensure that besides being bigger, the ink mark will also be bolder and more prominent. The ECI also asked the Managing Director of Mysore Paints and Varnish Ltd to ensure supply of brushes along with the indelible ink supplied to states and UTs with “immediate effect”. A Karnataka government undertaking, Mysore Paints provides the famous indelible ink for voters to all states in India and even some foreign countries.
